How-To-Tuesday: Decorating for Diwali in under 15 minutes!

Diwali – better known as the Festival of Lights to the Western world – is a 5 day long celebration, of many reasons, one of which is the return of Prince Rama after 14 years of exile. To welcome him back, 14 diyas (lamps) are lit. I won’t go into a history lecture but for me, since childhood, Diwali has meant celebrating with family, getting umpteenth presents, and getting a free pass to eat a ton of sweet and savory snacks that one usually wouldn’t get another time of the year.
New York City is such a melting pot of different communities; they have a parade for everything. In late September, there was even a day-long celebration with vendors, food and a concert that lit up Times Square at night. Celebrating Diwali in the U.S. is a different experience in itself. I’m so concerned about fire hazards I won’t even light up real lamps. So my mom and I came up with a solution. I bought some paper lanterns’, some string and we used an old traditional scarf (a really long one!) and ta-da!

What do you think? We’re planning on lighting some real lamps on Diwali (day of) and I’ll be sure to Instagram those as well.

Here are some great posts on Pinterest about Diwali decorations! I absolutely plan on trying some of these out.
